ARTISAN CRAFT WORKSHOP SERIES: Bandboxes

ARTISAN CRAFT WORKSHOP SERIES: Bandboxes

Saturday, July 20, 2024 - 10:00am

Immerse yourself in a monthly American craft workshop series where participants will create an artform using traditional materials and methods taught by experts in each craft to include baskets, bandboxes, hooked rugs, marbleized paper, and floorcloths.  Take home a wonderful hand crafted keepsake.

Review of the history of wallpaper covered bandboxes, with a focus on their heyday in the early to mid-19th century.  Participants will be constructing a small round box, covering with wallpaper and lining with newsprint using a variety of adhesives.  Participants may choose historical sewn construction methods or modern alternatives – or combination of both.  Participants will have a finished box by the end of the workshop.

Gina Gerhard is an historic textile demonstrator specializing in flax-to-linen processing.  She practices many other period crafts, including natural dyeing, weaving, historic sewing, painted floorcloths, and indulges her love of period wallpaper by making bandboxes using traditional construction.  She is retired and lives in an 1830 period home in Princess Anne, Maryland.

Cost is $100 which includes all materials.  An instruction book, additional materials and wallpapers are available to purchase from the instructor.
