Runnaway slave Sam hides in the attic of the Corbit-Sharp House

Visit Freedom Seekers: The Odessa Story

Sunday, February 13, 2011 - 1:00pm to 2:30pm

Join us as the Historic Odessa Foundation celebrates Black History Month with our program, Freedom Seekers: the Odessa Story. Slavery in Delaware was truly a “peculiar institution”; in the 19th century, the population of the state struggled, internally, between powerful slave interests and defiant and very vocal anti-slavery groups. Illustrating that struggle, our program features the Corbit-Sharp House and its outbuildings, designated by the National Park Service as a stop on the National Underground Railroad Network to Freedom.

View the film, Whispers of Angels which chronicles the story of Thomas Garrett, a prominent Wilmington abolitionist, and then follow in the footsteps of Sam, a fugitive slave seeking refuge in Odessa while working his way north to freedom. This program will be free to the public and is appropriate for children at least ten years of age; however, seating will be limited.

Please call Jennifer Cabell at 302-378-4119 to make a reservation.
