Juneteenth: The End of Slavery in Delaware

Juneteenth is the oldest known celebration commemorating the ending of slavery as a legal institution in the United States.  Dating back to 1865, a full two and a half years after President Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation,  it was June 19th when the Union Army landed in Galveston, Texas and spread the news that the Civil War had ended and that the enslaved were now free.
