Free Community Open House

Saturday, April 16, 2011 - 12:00pm to 4:00pm

Zipping along Delaware Route 1 to points north or south, travelers can easily miss one of Delaware’s and the East Coast’s most well-preserved historic districts - the town of Odessa. Nestled between U.S. Route 13 and the Appoquinimink River, the town of Odessa today belies its vibrant past as an important colonial port and stop on the Underground Railroad.
To celebrate its past and welcome the community to experience its historic treasures, the Historic Odessa Foundation is hosting a Community Open House on Saturday, April 16, from 12 to 4 p.m. This free, one-day event will give visitors the opportunity to explore and learn about the foundation’s historic 18th and early 19th century houses and buildings, collectively known at the Historic Houses of Odessa and its collection of more than 4000 decorative objects and furnishings, as well as learn about the programs that bring the past to life through the foundation’s tours, events and educational mission. Refreshments will be served and door prizes will be awarded.
The Historic Odessa Foundation exists to preserve and encourage the use of its historic buildings by the general public, students, and scholars in order to learn and appreciate the history, architecture, daily life, and furnishings of Delaware's colonial period with the anticipation that this process will contribute to the quality of life in the town of Odessa and the region. The Historic Odessa Foundation has just completed its fifth year serving the community since it’s reopening in 2005. The foundation offers family, children, school and special programs and serves visitors March through December, Wednesday thru Saturday, 10 am – 4:30 pm and Sunday 1- 4:30 pm. Other days are available by reservation.
