Digging More than Dirt at Avery's Rest

Friday, March 1, 2013 - 10:00am to Wednesday, May 1, 2013 - 4:30pm

An exhibit showcasing some of the best artifacts recently discovered at an on-going archaeological site in Rehoboth Beach, Delaware, sponsored by the Archaeological Society of Delaware.  Avery’s Rest was the 800-acre homesite of Captain John and Sarah Avery.  Using artifacts discovered at the site since 2006, the exhibit will explore the cultural material of early colonial English settlers in Delaware.
John Avery, originally from England, arrived on the north shore of Rehoboth Bay in 1674, along with his wife Sarah and their children.  Captain John Avery was captain of the local militia and head judge of the “Whorekill”.  John Avery died in 1682, and one of his daughters later came back to Avery’s Rest to occupy the site until about 1720.  This exhibit will give a glimpse into the frontier culture of early Delaware.
This exhibit is located in the Visitors Center.
