Buy George! Collecting Washington Memorabilia

Monday, May 23, 2011 - 12:00am to Sunday, August 7, 2011 - 12:00am

Americans have been purchasing the likeness of the father of their country for centuries. George Washington’s image has been positioned on everything from portrait engravings to miniature porcelain boots, with everything in between. Visitors to the Historic Odessa Foundation’s Bank Building will have the opportunity to see a small collection of such items from the museum’s collection and from member’s collections.
The portrait painter Gilbert Stuart can be credited with creating the standard representation of Washington. Notice how this iconic image persists today in so many Washington souvenirs marketed to Americans.
Admission to the Historic Odessa Foundation will include the small Buy George exhibit.
